The HRA exemption is the least of: the HRA you receive; rent paid minus 10% of basic + DA; and 50% of basic + DA in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune or Ahmedabad (40% elsewhere). The four new cities apply from tax year 2026-27 under the Income-tax Rules, 2026. HRA is exempt only in the old regime.
